Counseling, Hypnosis May Restore Missing Menstrual Cycles
Women who stop menstruating for reasons other than pregnancy or
menopause may be able to bring back their periods via hypnosis or
counseling.
Results of a small study reported in the October 2003 issue of
Fertility and Sterility suggested that counseling could help restore
normal menstrual patterns. The study involved 16 women whose cycles
apparently were thrown off by unhealthy attitudes toward eating.
(Poor nutrition, stress, too little body fat and excessive exercise
can cause women to stop menstruating.) Among eight participants who
received counseling, six women resumed menstruating. Among an
eight-member control group that received no counseling, only one
woman resumed menstruating.
In the same issue, researchers reported the results of a preliminary
study showing that nine out of 12 women who had stopped menstruating
resumed after a single session of hypnotherapy. These women also
reported improved well-being and self-confidence.
